9-Year-Old Boy Commits Suicide After He Was Bullied For Being Gay
A woman in Colorado has revealed that her 9-year-old son took his life last week because of anti-gay bullying from his classmates.
Leia Piece, of Denver, told FOX 31 Denver that she found out that her son, Jamel Myles, died in their residence on Thursday, August 23 – months after he told her he was gay over the summer.
She added that her son told her he wanted to tell his classmates when he went back to school because he was “proud of himself.”
Pierce said when he came out, he opened up about wanting to dress more femininely.
However, last Thursday – just four days after he started fourth grade at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School – Myles was pronounced dead.
The Denver Police Department told The Washington Post that officers responded to a “medical incident” at the boy’s home.
The 9-year-old was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. It was not immediately clear how he died, but the medical examiner ruled his death as a suicide.
Pierce told the Denver Post she believed bullying played a part in her son’s death.
She said her son told her daughter that his classmates told him to take his own life.
Pierce further said she wanted to raise awareness for bullying following her son’s death.
